Droitwich saltways: report of lecture by Dr. Whitley

View

WHEN DROITWICH WAS AN IMPORTANT CENTRE.

The Rev. Dr. Whitley read a paper to the Birmingham Archæological Society, last evening, on “The Salt Ways of the Droitwich District.” He remarked that the Droitwich brine was the strongest in the world. Its trade in mediæval times must have been enormous. It is recorded that 4,800 loads of salt left the town yearly to supply the county alone. In those days Droitwich occupied a position comparable to that of Birmingham today. Even the Romans regarded Droitwich as a place of considerable importance.
