A 13th-CENTURY SOMERSET CHURCH.

The old church said to have been built in the 13th century upon the hill or “mump” at Boroughbridge, Somerset, near to King Alfred’s Isle of Athelney, shows signs, unless something is done to preserve it, of disappearing in time from the landscape. The hill or fort of King Alfred with the old building on its summit forms a landmark which is seen for miles around, and is one of the most striking objects of this romantic county. Somerset is rich in the remains of old abbeys and ruins. Glastonbury Tor is nearly in a straight line with the smaller tor or mump of Boroughbridge, and memories of King Alfred abound in the neighbourhood. It would be a thousand pities to allow this interesting church to perish. It is, I believe, private property.—Mrs. Baker, Manor House, Othery, Bridgwater, Somerset.
