For the first few months of 1938, Ralph kept a diary in which he recorded details of family life. At that time he was 21 and still living with his parents in Grimsby, as were his brother Harold and sister Olive. His father Walter was fairly well-to-do and had a large corner house, 71 Humberstone Road, with a billiard table (often in use) and an aviary.
It isn’t clear from the diary exactly what job Ralph was doing at Christys, but it can’t have been very exacting as he found plenty of time there to study for his future career in the Inland Revenue.
Ralph’s future wife Dorothy Thickett is not mentioned at all, so probably they had not met at that time.
