MISCELLANEA ARISING

Regular readers of IGR publications will have noted the recent thanksgiving service for the completion of the new cathedral at Liverpool, whose mystical foundations I noted in Occasional Paper No. 11 Ritual Magic in the Church of England.  The momentous event of its completion was accompanied by a rash of articles on all aspects of the edifice (except the masonic–geomantic).  The most interesting fact to emerge from this welter of Liverpudliana is that the present architect, Frederick Thomas, now aged 80, staunchly refused to go over to using the metric system in the construction of the cathedral.  This has not aroused comment, merely that he is a stickler for tradition.  Of course, no mystic building in Britain has ever been built with the metric system, unlike Catalonia, where the mystic architect Gaudí used metric dimensions in his geomantic churches.  Thus the last gothic building in England constructed according to the ancient principles has maintained the canonical measure to the last.

The campaign for preventing the self-appointed custodians of Stonehenge from maintaining their ‘keep them all out’ stance has received what may prove to be a mortal blow when in October some anti-social vandals from an animal liberation organization sprayed slogans onto the venerable stones.  This mindless action is a major setback to a logical campaign and will doubtless be used by those who wish to bar access as an example of what happens when people like you and me are admitted.  That it was a break-in past their goon-boxes, Vietnam-War electronic surveillance systems and good old barbwire will not be mentioned.
