Aerial photograph of the Mother Goddess excavation. Head, nose, eyes, eyebrows
and mouth are prominent. The baulk below Magog’s chin was left so that an
earth profile could be shown for archaeological purposes. The figure was
approximately in this condition when Lethbridge left it for the last time. If it
had been properly conserved, it could still be as good as this. The photograph
below, which was taken by Nigel Pennick on 19th February 1978, shows the
condition into which the surface has fallen. White patches are not chalk, but
snow. The trees to the left correspond with those at the top centre of the
aerial pic. above (Cr. Fenris-Wolf Collexion).
