Michael Grant's Family Tree: The Mendelson Family

Robert Da Costa informs me that Joan Jenkins told him that Manny or Izzy Lee told her that the family came from Vishtinetz (Vištytis), in southwestern Lithuania. I do not (yet) have any evidence to back this up; the 1871 census says they came from Poland (which did not exist politically at the time).

There seems to be some confusion as to how exactly the Josephs in the top branch of the tree fit in. John Josephs said that his great-great-grandparents were Abraham and Rose Mendelson. However, Rose Pearlman, the granddaughter of Abraham and Rose, does not list Leah—the progenitor of the Josephs family—amongst her uncles and aunts. Indeed, she instead lists another Leah, married to Gabriel Woolf. She mentions Isaac and Annie Mendelson as her father's cousins.

However, the registry of marriages gives Annette as Gabriel's husband, and a later letter of Roses's gives his son, Monty, as "perhaps" Leah's son, so it looks like she got confused, and there's only one Leah, who was the daughter, as listed in her marriage certificate, of Abraham and Rose.

The brothers Isidor and Manville Levy and Ernest Lee had some connection with Cragside (in Thropton in Northumberland), the first house in the world to be electrified. However, I'm not entirely sure what: the electrification was installed by the 1880s, before they were born.
