He and his wife ran a butcher's shop in Tolworth, South London.
They had one daughter Betty, who helped her mother run the business after her father's untimely death. They ran it through World War II, after which they sold the business.
William died of septicaemia in 1936 after a minor accident at work. Anti-biotic drugs were not available to treat such conditions in those days.
