Robert John Napier Kellett, Captain

Robert John Napier Kellett was born in 1798 in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. He served as a British Army Officer - his army record can be found at the Public Record Office in file W025/793 f.10. Among other things, it shows that he received a Waterloo medal after service in France from May 1815 - 1 Oct 1818.

He married Jemima Hunter in Edinburgh in 1823: the following is an excerpt from the parish banns & marriages register obtained from the GRO of Scotland.

Edinburgh 30th Novemr 1823

Robert John Napier Kellett Esq Lieut 48 Regt
Miss Jemima Hunter St Andrews parish, daugr
of the late Hunter Paisley 3 times proc no objections
Married 4th Decemr by the Revd Edward Craig

His Army record also gives details of his children:

His military career is mentioned in various books, including:

Officers of the Black Watch 1725-1986 (ISBN 0 906304 08 3) shows:
Kellett, Robert John Napier: from half pay as Capt. 3 Sep 1829: Half pay 24 Feb 1837: retired 19 Oct 1838: died at Florence 2 Nov 1853

His son William's army record is also documented:

THE NEW ANNUAL ARMY LIST for 1850 by Major H G HART, 49th Regt. shows, in the 72nd (The Duke of Albany's own Highlanders) Regt. of Foot:
Kellett, Wm. Aug. H. Napier ; Ens. 27 Mar 46 ; Lt. 10 Jan 49
(interestingly there is also a Charles Fleming Hunter in the same regiment)

and that for 1853 shows (in the retired section):
Kellett, W. Aug. H. Napier, Canadian Regt. ; Ens. 27 Mar 46 ; Lt. 10 Jan 49 ; 1/2 pay 12 Oct 52

Robert and Jemima are buried, together with their son William, in the "English Cemetery" in Florence. Their memorial inscriptions are still reasonably legible. They all died within a few months of each other in 1853/4: William was only 27.

Their 3 daughters lived rather longer than William: Jane Sarah (1823-1892), Jemima Hunter (1827-1902) and Augusta Henrietta (1836-1911). Jemima, the only one to marry, married Elias Henriquez Melhado: there was a pre-nuptial agreement signed in Florence in 1855. Their daughter Evelyn Augusta Kellett Melhado (1856-1941) was my mother's grandmother. She also had a son. More information about the Kellett family is given here.
