On the outskirts of Boroughbridge, in Yorkshire, the “Devil’s Arrows” rear their heads to the confusion of archæologists and other wiseacres who profess to understand such things. There are three of these rude masses of gritstone, standing in a direct line, north and south, at a distance of from 200 ft. to 300 ft. from each other.
In Leland’s day there were four stones, one of which, having fallen, has since been used as the foundation of a bridge.
The heights of these huge monoliths vary from 16½ ft. to 22½ ft.
