Watkins used this legend of the Tibbett or Tibble Stone in The Old Straight Track, page 31. The friend mentioned there may be the writer of this note, which is not in Watkins’s handwriting. The two comments highlighted like this have been added by another writer, probably Watkins.

Tibbett Stone

The story goes, that many years ago, there dwelt in that part of the country a giant, who wishing to destroy some ones property went up into the hills and found a large stone which he intended to use in his work of destruction. When returning he slipped and in falling, his heel cut a furrow in the hillside, and the stone dropped to the ground, where it remains.

Upon the stone are five indentations, said to be the impressions of the fingers of the giant.
