JOHN (seated!) AND THE BEARER on the fo’c’sle. The bearer was very efficient and although he could not speak very good English was always anxious to enter into conversation. He taught me a few odd phrases of Kashmiri, including “Russell Harree” which seemed to be a form of greeting although the bearer said that it meant “slowly beat.” I used to call it out occasionally to any Kashmiris who might be going by the houseboat and they were always very delighted. John and I spent many hours sat on the two seats seen here on either side of the (sliding) door.
