GULMARG, from which this photograph was taken, is the second most popular resort in Kashmir. It lies of a height of 9,000 feet, transport up to the last 2,000 feet being by mountain ponies (from Tanmarg). We climbed a further 1,000 feet from Gulmarg (also by ponies) up to Killenmarg which lies on the summer snow line and where we were able to tread the snow of a Himalayan glacier. The difference in the quality of the air at 10,000 feet was very noticeable. Visibility was poor when we were at this height and rain hampered my attempts to take photographs.
