ANOTHER AMPHIBIAN. The fascinating story of how I swam up to the highest lake in the world from sea level is told in my book, “From Cleethorpes to Kashmir, by Crawl and Breaststroke” (Chatto and Windus, 42/-). The lakes were generally very weedy but swimming boats were moored in the middle of cleared areas and we spent many afternoons cooling off in Lake Dal. The white edifice in the background (against which I am specially posed) is the marajah’s palace. It is a colossal place and Buckingham Palace would look like a council house by the side of it.
